It’s whatever you want it to be. Like any tool, people will use it in different ways. Some will build things, others wont.
Personally, twitter has been huge for me. Making connections with people I would never have known. Hitting the ground running at conferences. Planning tweetups to meet old friends that I’ve never met? Crazy awesome.
It’s ours! I loved your examples throughout the vlog… they make social media so tangible. I think as the popularity of twitter and other social media outlets grow you will see more of that type of thing.
For instance, how that the 25-35 demographic has really jumped on the Facebook bandwagon look at how many more baby and wedding pictures you are seeing. It’s the equivalent of opening your wallet up in a bathroom and showing pictures of your kids but on a whole new level.
Twitter is making a name for itself whenever a big news event hits. People who are on scene are twittering their thoughts out to the rest of the world before the mainsteam media even gets a hold of the story…now that’s power. The best thing about it is that the twitterverse doesn’t even care about the magnitude of the news it’s just glad to hear it.
Great post! I think people get so caught up in how to use social media and the “right” way to use it, which is like saying there is a “right” way to go about life.
And I like the thoughts on having a balance – that’s great. Yay respect!
Part of what makes social networking so powerful is that it is social. Meaning it can be used to formulate relationships. Part of that is knowing someone beyond their brand (personal or otherwise). It requires a certain vulnerability. That said, I am careful to make sure that most of the time I am adding value.
@Todd – I think you’ve proved it’s been about connections through the way you’ve been building relationships and the polar plunge. Saw your tweet today, “Over 60% of my Polar Plunge donors are followers on twitter whom I’ve never met in person. Twitter FTW! #polarplunge.” That’s awesome.
@Jillian – Interesting example with the wallet sized picture scenario. I see it as a great benefit that people are able to share information on a large scale, no matter how big or small the news, and people actually care! It’s great to see.
@Rebecca – Exactly! I think respect = balance. Two-way communication can never have be one-sided.
@Kami – Excellent point about vulnerability. Putting your more “human” side out on the internet is very daunting, but I’m glad people do. I will be honest I get really nervous before I post ANYTHING on the internet, especially video. I’ve made connections with very encouraging people though to help it get easier every time.
